Performance Glass, Crabtree Terrace
Sometimes you need to call in the heavy weights. That’s exactly what was needed when we were approached by Performance Glass to provide access equipment for a major project in Raleigh, NC.
This epic build – one of Raleigh’s most important developments – included 140,000 square foot of prime office space and 38,000 square foot of retail space. With plans to clad the building in glass, GC Brasfield & Gorrie called in the help of Performance Glass to get the job done.
For this job, we deployed a total of eight hydraulic, gas-powered Fraco Act 8 mastclimbing platforms. With a platform length of up to 50ft, and a maximum capacity of 16,000lbs in twin configuration, these formidable machines surrounded the perimeter of the building.
Over four months, Performance Glass completed the daunting task of glazing this massive structure. The eight mastclimbing platforms used on the build were vitally important to the Performance Glass team, allowing them to transport men and materials quickly, safely, and efficiently. Ronald Brooks headed up the glazing team, “This was a major job for us, but one we knew we could handle,” he said. “We have the expertise and well-trained team to handle a job like this but what we didn’t have were the machines to get the glass where it needs to go.
“Mastclimbers LLC were the perfect fit for this job with the knowledge and resources to provide us with exactly the access system we needed.
“They were on hand at all times to provide us with ongoing support and quickly responded to any questions we had.”
The Fraco Act 8 is probably one of the best known rental machines we have in our fleet. The platform is celebrated for its versatility and power, and is a common product for GCs.
When working with a material like glass, it’s important to have flexibility. Traditional scaffolding wouldn’t have cut for a job of this size. As glazing projects become more daring and ambitious, there is an ever-growing need for access solutions that give contractors the tools they need to work at height safely and effectively.
Mastclimbing platforms are just part of the puzzle but without these mechanical workhorses, it would be far more difficult for architects to realize their innovative ideas; especially when it comes to cladding a large building in glass.
